Notes for Nella (Nellie) Vangsness
Her name was Nella but everyone called her Nellie.

Nellie's' home was also her business. She owned and operated the Sylvester Nursing Home for the Aged on South Burlington Drive, Muncie, In. for many years. The building was built in 1789.

Mrs. Sylvester started the nursing home after serving as a nurse in the US Navy during WWI. She was one of the first females allowed in the Navy. Her Husband, Paul C Sylvester was also in WWI, serving in the US Marine Corp. Mr. Sylvester passed 8 months earlier.

Nellie was also one of the first women allowed in the American Legion. She had to petition Congress to be allowed in. As the story goes, she would go down to the Legion hall with her husband, because that was the only way she was allowed in, and play poker with the boys. Well, sometimes Paul would not want to go and Nellie could not get in. That just would not due, so she started the process to become a member, and did.

At the time of her death. Mrs. Sylvester is survived by her 3 children. Daughter, Mrs. Virginia Anderson, Son Paul John Sylvester, and daughter, Una Sylvester. Nellie also has 8 grand children.
Notes for Paul Conner (Spouse 1)
Paul Conner was adoped, so it seems impossible to know who is birth parents were.

He was adoped by the Sylvesters and he worked hard on their farm. Mr. Sylvester died and Mrs. Sylvester remarried. There had been an arrangement that Paul Conner would get the farm, but later a child of the second husband got the farm on the second husband’s death.
