RAYMER FOLKLORE
Around 1855 Abraham and Sarah (Johnson) Raymer and their eight children left Grayson Co., Ky. and came to what is now Carter Co., Missouri. They settled near Ellsinore, Mo. ( on property where the Raymer cemetery is now located.)
When the Civil War began, Isaac(one of Abraham's sons) joined the Union forces. He fought in the famous battle at Pilot Knob, and received a leg wound-for which he received a $9 per month lifetime pension. One winter night in 1862-3, Abraham went to the barn to see what was disturbing the livestock. He never returned. It is believed he was killed by Southern sympathizers. His body was never found. Sarah lived to be about 85 years old and was buried in the Raymer cemetery near Ellsinore.
