Notes for Peder J. Kyllo
Peder was the only child of Jossias Pedersen Hegre and Karen Eriksdatter. He was born in Norway on June 12, 1853. Jossias died in 1854, about a year after Peder was born. Karen became the wife of Johan Iverson around 1860. Apparently, Peder didn't get along with his step-father, because he went to live with his father's sister, Randi. She had married a man named Kyllo, but she was widowed in 1857. She had a son, John, born in 1847.

Under the old Norwegian system of patrynomics, Peder Kyllo would have been called Peder Jossiasen. The Hegre part of his father's name was probably the name of the farm on which the family worked, or their villiage. Randi's husband probably got his Kyllo name in the same way. Randi, her son John, and Peder came to America. They sailed from Trondhjem on April 27, 1869 and arrived in Quebec on June 18th, on the ship Franklin.

The Norwegian patrynomic system was giving way to the English system of last names for Norwegians in the United States, and Randi used the name Kyllo. Peder must have decided to take the name Kyllo from Randi, but he must have felt some connection to the name Hegre, for as one of the founders of the Lutheran Church built in the very southeast corner of Kenyon Township, he caused it to be named Hegre Church. Randi and the boy settled in Goodhue County and began farming. Peder married Kjarsten Oline Romo in Kenyon on August 2, 1875. Peder and Kjarsten had eight children. Peder died in Kenyon on May 30, 1908. Kjarsten died in Kenyon on August 18, 1916.
Notes for Kjersten Oline (Spouse 1)
Kjersten was born in Trondheim, Norway on February 14, 1859.

She was the daughter of Christofer Romo & Gunhild Gederaas. Sometime after 1869, the family came to America and settled on a farm in Belle Creek Township in Goodhue County, Minnesota.

On August 2, 1875, in Wanamingo Township, Goodhue County, she married Peder Kyllo, who had come to Minnesota in 1870 with his aunt and cousins. Peder and Kjarsten had eight children and farmed in Goodhue County. Peder died in Kenyon on May 30, 1908. Kjarsten died in Kenyon on August 18, 1916. Both are buried in the Hegre Church Cemetery in Skyburg, Minnesota.
